curated by Adam Carr

Tulips & Roses, Vilnius is extremely delighted to announce its inaugural exhibition, THE STORE, curated by Adam Carr.
THE STORE takes as its starting point the location of the gallery––Vilnius, a place in which the art market has just begun––and its occasion––the galleries inaugural exhibition––to form a celebration of the art object while aspiring to provide critical reflection on the manner by which it operates in the eyes
of the art market.
All of the artists included in THE STORE have been invited to participate with works that will available to the general public. The result is an inventory comprising artwork by over 25 international artists, as well as projects curated by other people, all of which can be purchased at relatively small prices or be taken away for free. THE STORE therefore offers artworks to a mass audience usually conserved in a private gallery context for a selective few, and in doing so aims to offer a new experience not only within private commercial galleries but for exhibition going entirely. Interestingly, by making purchases from the goods on offer––selecting a pair of keys, a poster and not say a slice of a cake and/or a napkin, for example––viewers will in effect be curating their own shows for which can taken away with them. This shifts the role of the spectator into consumer and active participant, and in response to their activity, the exhibition will be subjected to perpetual change, order and reorder–– altering both its form and meaning.

DEWEER ART GALLERY @ ART BRUSSELS 2008
Deweer Art Gallery : Hidden Treasures
ArtBrussels, Brussels Expo, BE
Stand 1 B05
18 – 21 April 2008

For its presentation at the upcoming 26th edition of the contemporary art fair ArtBrussels, Deweer Art Gallery selected Stephan Balkenhol, Sergey Bratkov, Tony Cragg, Matthieu Laurette, Panamarenko and Koen Vanmechelen. The way in which these artists will be presented, will be quite unusual. This time, the gallery chose not to use the classical design of a booth, with dividing walls in which a group show is organised with several works by each selected artist. Instead, each artist will be given a separate space within the stand, showing only one (grand-scale) piece. This concept, entitled “Hidden Treasures”, will allow the viewer to see important pieces under the best possible circumstances.

INFORMACIÓN CONTRA INFORMACIÓN

9 November 2007 - 6 January 2008

Information versus Information is an exhibition produced within the working framework of Proxecto-Edición. It is a multifaceted, developing project (in progress from 2006 to 2008, with workshops, seminars, productions, exhibitions, etc.) that focuses on the investigation into the different media currently available and the way they are used by the artists. Information versus Information aims to put forward a series of proposals and works where information becomes the battlefield in which objectivity and neutrality are exposed. This friction between different pieces of information (this is where the title of the exhibition comes from), which receive feedback from very diverse attitudes and ideologies, decentralises and de-hierarchises the homogeneity of the information and its mass experience. Under the guidance of works by Jimmie Durham, Jota Castro, Boris Mikhailov, Jordi Mitjà, Maria Pask, Rubén Grilo, Allan Sekula, Akram Zaatari or Yann Sérandour, and those produced specifically for this project, such as the productions by María Ruido and Jacob Fabricius (OLD NEWS), we can examine different ways of working with information (in contrast to conventional hegemonic ways) which have inherited the radical transformations generated in the sixties and seventies

SCHEIN SEIN: SOZIALE DIMENSIONEN DES GLAMOUR IN DER AKTUELLEN KUNST / BEING SHINING : SOCIAL DIMENSION OF GLAMOUR IN CONTEMPORARY ART
27 October - 17 November 2006

group show with Carsten Fock, Julia Friese, Georg Gatsas, Isi Kunath, Matthieu Laurette, Tamara Lorenz, Michaela Melián, Paulina Olowska, Jürgen Teller, Dagmar Varady, Johannes Wohnseifer
curated by Julia Moritz and Jana Sperling
'Being Shining' presents different perspectives on the tactics of glamour in visual arts. Glamour in this context is understood as an extraordinary performative setting, that aims at distancing the subject from the masses. Via strategies of launching a certain image of the self in contrast to the other (and vice versa) different positions in the social system and its hierarchical order are being gained. The exclusive and exotic potential of glamour raises questions about of the possibilies of social mobility thorugh visual representation and the tension between glamour?s fictious narratives and the actual conditions of especially gendered concepts of identity.

TAKING BACK THE DOLLAR: ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIES
Friday, June 2nd, 2006, 6:30 – 8:30 PM

Roundtable
 Panelists:
Carolina Caycedo, artist, Puerto Rico
Paul Glover, economical activist, Philadephia
Matthieu Laurette, artist, Paris
Maka, artist representing Yomango, Mexico D.F.
Yates McKee, writer, New York
Moderator:
Gregory Sholette, artist, writer, activist, New York

Economies reflect what is considered valuable, and for some, what is ethical, or even fundamentally human. They marginalize or exclude what is considered detrimental to the system, those things that get labeled as parasitic or contraband. In order to change these definitions and the populations they point to, we can try to depose, reform, or diversify our notion of economies. This panel discussion includes artists, organizers, writers, and activists who reject or slyly compete with the capitalistic system of buying and selling. By disrupting basic economic processes, by proposing gift economies or autonomous forms of collective production, do they challenge the idea of personhood as defined by owning something, some amount, some trait, or some capacity? Are alternative economies anti-American? Are they perhaps subverting familiar notions of citizenship, producing alternative subjects?

The panel is presented with the generous support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, on occasion of the Vera List Center’s year-long investigation of notions of forgiveness.

SAVE ME FROM WHAT I WANT
The Market and its Effects on Contemporary Art Production
Thursday, 6 April-- 3:00–4:30 P.M.

Panel discussion with:
Jörg Heiser -- Co-Editor FRIEZE, Berlin
Matthieu Laurette -- Artist, Paris
Joanna Mytkowska -- Gallerist, Foksal Gallery Foundation, Warsaw
Seth Siegelaub -- Gallerist, Amsterdam
The proliferation of biennales, fairs and contemporary art auctions over the last decade has turned what was once a cottage industry into an industry proper. How has this affected not only the way art is sold, but also the way it is made and shown? How can one define the difference between art being driven by ideas and questions of aesthetic practice, and art being market-driven? And is that difference still being made?

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW
1 April 2006

Seminar
Following the publication of /If walls had ears //(De Appel 1984-2005)/, the manifestation /That was then, this is now/ will be held in De Appel on Friday 31 March and Saturday 1 April 2006. With this project, we’ll try to make the history of De Appel hearable, visible and touchable. We’d like to invite a number of artists who’s work was shown at De Appel between 1984 and 2005 to represent their work by means of stories and the actuality back then, and to explain their ideas to the public.
At the attic of De Appel a studio will be built, from where the communication will be set up with the artists. Pre-recorded and live interviews, conversations and stories will be broadcasted live from the studio or at distance (via (digital) telephone connections and webcams).
The programme will be non-stop and will be made in front of an audience. Each hour, a different host will introduce and interview the artists and will comment their work. The interviews will take appr. 15 minutes.

DAY LABOR
23 October 2005 - 9 January, 2006

group show with
Can Altay, Alex Bag, Tamy Ben-tor, Daniel Bozhkov, Esra Ersen, Jonah Freeman, Coco Fusco, Christy Gast, Ignacio Gonzalez-Lang, Matthieu Laurette, Daniel Lefcourt, Will Kwan, Andreja Kuluncic, Yoshua Okon, Nira Pereg, Mika Rottenberg, Hank Willis Thomas and Aaron Young.
Curated by Amy Smith-Stewart.
The exhibition is an attempt to examine society’s obsession with the notion of “becoming.” From day laborer to pop star, from paramilitary leader to corporate giant, the global economy is continually churning out labels, brands and archetypes. Many of the artists in Day Labor challenge these social trappings by inserting themselves into the public domain. Some recreate situations in the workforce as a means to comment on the brutality, inequity and the absurdity of the marketplace.

Matthieu Laurette presents
WHAT DO THEY WEAR AT FRIEZE ART FAIR?

21–23 October 2005
Daily guided tours of Frieze Art Fair led by international fashion experts:

Matthieu Laurette has been invited to make a project at the Frieze Art Fair responding to the idea of the tour format. Laurette has asked a selection of the world’s leading fashion experts to conduct tours of Frieze Art Fair. Instead of commenting on the art works on display, the experts focus on the visitors and their fashion styles. The experts become both guides and performers; their distinct personalities and abilities create a special atmosphere through fashion’s highly specific vocabulary and a sense of occasion that shapes the artistic vision of the artwork.

The fashion experts include Peter Saville, Isabella Blow, Bay Garnett and Kira Jolliffe.

Laurette’s daily tours led by international fashion experts are accessible to art fair visitors and will take place on Friday 21– Sunday 23 October at 3.00pm. Access to the tours is included in the Frieze Art Fair admission ticket however places are limited. Reservations for each day’s tour can be individually booked at the Information Desk from 11am on the day.

23 September - 2 November 2005

The 9th Baltic Triennial of International Art will be entitled “Black Market”. Highly profitable black markets not only - paradoxically - emerge within the economy as a result of enforcing strict sanctions in trade politics but are also the shadowy underside of legal economics and in this sense constitutive for the “official” economic system. The Triennial intends to explore artistic practices referring to the topic of the project. It aims to discuss the links between authorized and forbidden economic exchange and with that the interventions between marginalized and “official” fields. The structure of the Triennial adapts to the model of double structures. The main exhibition will take place the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius while a second exhibition parallel in time will be presented in the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London and will correspond with that in Vilnius. The project will invite around 50 artists from more than 15 countries. In order to open up a new field of discussions about the topic, artists or collaborations of artists are encouraged to produce site-specific work for both of the exhibition venues, which shall enter dialogue and offer different perspectives on the phenomenon of black markets. The Triennial includes different formats and sites of presentations: Exhibition of art works, artistic interventions in the city of Vilnius as well as screenings of artists’ films in CAC’s own TV program (broadcasted on TV1 television channel in Lithuania). Debates, lectures and a seminar as well as a printed publication accompany the exhibition and will provide further background information and theoretical discussions about the artistic practices and the topic of the Triennial.
