press release

Elvis Has Just Left the Building features existing and newly produced work by 11 international artists foregrounding the cultural myths that have left their mark on popular imagination. The wide array of interventions sets out to examine the origins and motives of firmly rooted collective beliefs, fears and expectations.

Sightings of extinct animals, conspiracy theories, UFO abductions, the ubiquitous Elvis apparitions and other compelling myths from Australia and abroad are among the topics tackled by the participants. Shifting from truth to fiction and back again, the show attempts to unravel our manifold apprehensions and misreadings of which urban legends are the fantastic echo.

Elvis Has Just Left the Building will be set off with a unique event staged in the legendary mining town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder On January 18 and 19, strongman Georges Christen from Luxembourg will perform his amazing PowerShow at Kalgoorlie Hotel/Judd’s Pub. His achievements include towing trains, planes and ships with his teeth, exploding hot water bottles with his lungs and bending iron bars with his bare hands. Billed as ‘The World's Strongest Man’, Christen holds no less than 21 official Guinness Records in feats of strength and will attempt his 22nd Record in the heart of the Goldfields.

The opening night at the PICA venue on January 25 will also host The 3rd Convention of Look-Alikes. Previously held in Paris and Turin, this uncanny meeting will bring together the talent and looks of the stars of music, film, sports and politics, both past and present. Winners of a nationwide call for look-alikes will be invited to attend the opening and interact with the public.

Held in conjunction with the Festival’s opening night celebration of the Celestial City, featuring John Cage’s MusiCircus, on January 25, the Convention and PICA opening night are all free public events.
The exhibition will travel to Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin.

Artists Note:

The opening night of the exhibition hosts Déjà vu – 3rd International Convention of Look-alikes. Previously held in Paris and Turin, this uncanny meeting organised by Paris based Matthieu Laurette in conjunction with PICA and the Perth International Arts Festival brings together the talent and looks of the stars of music, film, sports and politics, both dead and alive. Numerous look-alikes have responded to a nationwide call and are invited to attend the opening and interact with the public. In the exhibition, Laurette presents a prototype poster of the first of these events.
